The Shitenno: The pillar that upholds heaven
*The Shitenno: The Pillar that Upholds Heaven*
Being appointed or acting as a Shitenno (the Four Devas) is not about achieving a sporting goal or obtaining an award for technical mastery. In Hatsumi Sensei's vision, it is a calling to exist as "Deities of the Martial Arts" whose primary mission is one: protection.
1. Protecting the Leader's Ability
Hatsumi Sensei is clear: the Shitenno protect the ability of those who are leaders. This means that the Shitenno does not seek personal glory, but rather becomes the guardian of the channel through which the teaching flows. If the leader is the center, the Shitenno are the four directions that allow that center to remain stable and secure. Without this protection, the transmission (Densho) risks breaking down.
2. Guardians of the "World of Great Dignity"
As mentioned before, Budo only has substance in a world of dignity. The Shitenno is the one who safeguards that dignity in the four directions (North, South, East, and West). It is not merely a physical guard; it is an ethical and spiritual vigilance. To be a Shitenno today means constantly asking, “Is this right?” ensuring that Budo does not stray into empty violence or personal ego.
3. From Experts to “People of Life” (Meijin)
The true significance of being a Shitenno lies in the transformation of the term Meijin. You are no longer just an “expert” in striking or throwing; you become a “Person of Life” (命人). Your responsibility extends to the voiceless nature of nature and to posterity.
The Shitenno protects life.
The Shitenno protects the Master’s truth.
The Shitenno protects the future of those who will come after.
4. A Sensory Roadmap
Just like texts with their own "scent," the Shitenno must have its own fragrance: that of real experience and unwavering loyalty. We are not photocopies of a technique, but sentient beings who have chosen to be the guardians of an ancient tradition.
To be a Shitenno is to understand that Budo is not for oneself. It is a sacred service of mutual protection (Meijin Doshi) so that the essence of the teachings of the Great White Dragon family continues to have that "aroma of truth" that can only be breathed when there are worthy guardians protecting the doors of the Dojo.
