The Uncounted Steps: Chronicle of an Invisible Harmony on the Tatami
The Uncounted Steps: Chronicle of an Invisible Harmony on the Tatami
Inspired by my experiences during the training session in Madrid
In the age of quantification, where every step seems to need a digital counter to exist, there is a truth that escapes statistics: most of the steps we take in life are precisely those that go uncounted. It is these invisible movements that place us on the border between the romanticism of what could have been and the stark acceptance of reality.
Last April 18th, Madrid was not just a city, but the epicenter of a profound connection. On the tatami, a group of practitioners immersed themselves in an experience that defied labels. There were no ages, only experiences; no masks, only transparent gazes and smiles that sprang from a genuine place.
The Gaze
While the noise of the world often fuels rivalry, the figure of Hatsumi Sensei emerges as a beacon of contrast. From his serenity, the Master observes the immensity of life and the purity of an art that transcends technique to become a direct benefit to humanity. It is in this observation that one learns that true mastery does not reside in conflict, but in the "wavering harmony" of hearts beating in unison during practice.
For those who shared this space with the Byakuryūō family, the feeling is one of gratitude and privilege. Perseverance became tangible, and the innocent questions reminded the attendees that learning is an infinite path of joy and a sparkle in the eyes.
The essence of the survivor
And today, on the plane from Madrid to Gran Canaria, I reflect on this, which defines not only a discipline, but a philosophy of life in the face of adversity.
In the words of Hatsumi Sensei himself:
"A ninja is a person who has grown and survived despite all difficulties and has become someone whose skills and knowledge stand out."
At the end of the day, the steps that truly matter aren't those recorded by a device, but those that, silently and with perseverance, allow us to overcome difficulties and achieve the transparency of art.
